Background

The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS), established in 2009 by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC), aims to attract the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD studies in Hong Kong's universities.

Eligibility

Candidates seeking admission as new full-time PhD students at the eight universities listed below should be eligible to apply, regardless of their country of origin, prior work experience, or ethnic background.

  • Hong Kong Baptist University
  • Lingnan University
  • The Chinese University of Hong Kong
  • The Education University of Hong Kong
  • The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
  • The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
  • The University of Hong Kong

Applicants must have exceptional academic performance, research ability/potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities.

Fellowship Award

For a period of up to three years, each awardee receives an annual stipend of HK$325,200 (approximately US$41,690) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$13,600 (approximately US$1,740). In the academic year 2024/25, 300 PhD Fellowships will be awarded*. Additional support may be provided by the chosen universities for awardees who require more than three years to complete their PhD degree. Selection Panel

Shortlisted applications will be reviewed by one of the two Selection Panels comprised of experts in the relevant board areas, depending on their areas of study:

Humanities, Social Sciences, and Business Studies Sciences, Medicine, Engineering, and Technology
